How to mix powder adhesive with Ink.
« on: January 01, 2016, 09:19:19 AM »
I was making some transfers and I noticed that when I pass the paper through the powder no matter how much I shake the paper it has a lot of residue. When I apply the transfer to the shirt it has a noticeable amount of adhesive around the art, what can I do to fix that? I tried trimming the paper around the art as close as possible but there is still some left inside and such. The powder iam using is 0-80 from ace supplies, can i mix the powder with the ink. if i can how many powder i must put to the ink?

I've never mixed the powder with ink, but rather, like you, passed the transfers through it in a shallow box lid/tray.
I have had better luck with less residue on the paper when first semi-curing the ink. The semi-cured ink also stands up better to a soft brush which is the next level of defense against this enemy.

Usually, as that seems to make production easier, going straight from the press to the dryer belt, and then also, I think, gives the benefit of less fragility during the adhesive powder application (and removal of excess)

btw, in many instances, the addition of the adhesive is not needed. It is more of an aid for some tricky synthetic materials, and also helps when plastisol inks are over cured.

I've found this to happen to me in two different situations. If the humidity is high and my paper is perhaps a little moist. Or if I just dump a fresh batch of powder into my bin. I use a flour sifter to get rid of any clumps that come in the powder and I think this creates some static electricity that affects the powder. I try to put new powder in at night and let it settle, then it seems fine the next day.

The transfer paper and powder I use both come from Ryonet. After running it through the powder I hold it up, shake it off and flick the back side with my fingers all over the paper. This gets every bit of excess off for me.

Maybe try to run the paper through the dryer before you print and see if that makes a difference. (I stopped doing this unless it's very humid.)

we will print our transfers, then powder them, then send em through the dryer. When we powdereded after the dryer, we found it was leaving residue on the garments.

In my very limited experience with transfers, I had this same problem with the first powder I tried which was quite course like sugar. Then I ordered the fine powder which is more like salt and have had no problems.
The fine powder brushes off easily but I guess it has a lesser  adhesive bond?
