Try this for AI files (I do this all the time and it works amazingly well...)

1. Open the file with Adobe Viewer
2. Save it as a PDF
3. Open the PDF in Ghostview
4. Convert it to a writable PDF

Now you can import the new PDF normally into Corel Draw (most of the time.)
