Flock on Hats?
« on: May 21, 2015, 12:10:56 PM »
I'm having some issues with trying to heat press flock on hats.  I'm sure it is just a matter of tweaking things or using different hats or whatever.  Basically, to get the flock to stick I have to use enough pressure that it is causing the white adhesive to sort of bleed around the edges so there is a faint white outline around everything (looks like crap) and the flock definitely looks a little flattened.  If I back off the pressure to where the white goes away and the flock looks nice, the flock isn't adhering at all to the hat.  It either comes off cleanly when removing the backing or can be peeled off the hat by just lightly rubbing with a finger.  Attached is a photo of the white outline.  I am pressing with a variety of pressures, all at 300-320 (i tried both) for 15-20 (again, tried both) seconds as recommended and peeling cold, also as recommended.  Any thoughts?

Tested on a shirt and not having the same issue.  Using Siser Flock.

How well is your hat fitting on your platen? Is it snugged down by the tensioner and "flat" against the rubber?
Have you tried pre-heating the hats with a 5 second or so pressing?

It is pretty snug and I have pre-pressed everything. any general tips when it comes to flock? I may be missing something basic.

Never used flock film.

I don't remember if Siser Tech was much help with problem solving  (it won't help you here much but Specialty Materials was great!)

Only flocking I ever did was almost forty years ago, direct printed an adhesive, and the flocking fibers were sprinkled on similarly to thermograph raised letter business cards and stationary.
