Dryer features
« on: September 17, 2011, 10:09:26 AM »
I'm in the market for a used dryer and am looking for some suggestions, namely are there any brands I should avoid any features you love or wish you had. I loved the dryer Rich bruoght to the indy show but don't have the budget. Have found a M&R economax II for sale they want 3500.00 looks like new, suppose to be low hours but its at the high end of my budget right now, if anybody is running one would like to hear your thoughts.

We have an older economax and it still works great. Definitely a nice dryer. For electric dryers I'd say my favorites are Vastex and M&R... can't go wrong with either manufacturer.

If you're buying an IR panel dryer, get one with digital PID temp control.  Forced air is nice too.

all I can tell you is the Economax 2 is a really good dryer and probably will outlast both of us. They are pretty bullit proof![/url]

We've been running HIX dryers since the early 90's, nothing too special about them except that they rarely have problems.  I've overhauled one of mine, IR panels, a couple internals, and insulation due to water damage.  The only thing bad I could say about them is that it is not that easy to get inside, otherwise they have been tanks, I'm sure mine could last decades.  The last one I got was kind of custom, it has removable filters for the forced air and the end covers are on hinges for easy cleaning build up of lint and residue.

simplicty (RJenning and Black Body dryers are built very simple and very simple to fix unlike the Harco dryer where there were wires running everywhere and terminals galore)
ease of getting inside the dryer (my 2 Harco dryers were a PITA to get inside The RJennings and Blackbody were extremely simple to get inside of )
Is the dryer expandable? The RJennings dryer is expandable and I think vastex dryers are as well.

If you called you know by now I am not in. it's show time in Barcelona and a few of us will be there for the remainder of the week. Not trying to deter you from buying new(that's how we survive) but don't be concerned about buying an Economax2 used. Unless it was dropped from a 4th floor window it's probably as good as the day it was built. The radiant panels in the unit have around a 12 year expected life span without any problem. The wire size and type as well as the connectors don,t burn off ever that we know of so it's pretty hard to hurt one. just a FYI.

I'll tell ya this regarding electric conveyors- if you have the space, go for the more traditional, longer, enclosed chamber models.  The Vastex 'shorty' dryers do work great, come at an excellent price are very reliable and they're a good company to boot but I'll argue that you just don't get the same cure out of a short dryer, nor the same production as an insulated, longer chambered one with airflow.

If space is an issue, Vastex for sure but if there's room for it, check out those m&r models.  I would be confident buying used with the IR dryers, like Rich said there's just not much to go wrong there on the well-built models and what is bad is easily replaced for not much in cost.  Both M&R and Vastex do a bang-up job on parts and service.

Is there an electric  dryer that uses less electric that others, maybe a so called energy efficient.  I have an older national single phase and it love the juice.

Zoo I understand where your coming from on the longer chamber models. I have the room haven't decided if the reward out wiegh the cost difference cause I won't use but a third to a half of that dryers pottential in my shop for at least another five years, this is my goal for dropping in an auto. We're down to deciding which is going to serve our needs the best for the money, wish me luck cause I'm going to order by mid next week.
rmonks Vastex and M&R are lowering thier energy consumption give them a call never hurts to ask till your signing the check to pay for it :o

That may sneak up on you faster than you think.  You can always run a larger dryer at a lower temp and longer dwell.
