Screen frame planters

I decided to put my old aluminum screens to use. Made a planter box for tomatoes... 16 inches deep, 23x31. Lined the bottom with plastic. How many tomato plants do you think I should attempt in this planter... 4? 5?

I should show you my "planter", and by planter I mean parking lot!

We have a tomato plant coming up where the concrete meets the sidewalk/building foundation, it has two golf ball sized tomatoes on it! Lol

This is right by the front door of the front tenants which is a salon and gets a fair amount of foot traffic.

I'd say at 3 or 4- seems like plenty of room.

Alas, two years ago the gophers pretty much told me that vegetable gardening was no longer for me.
It was disheartening to see my healthy three or so foot plants, one by one, first wither (as the roots were gnawed) and then actually disappear into their damn tunnels.

The wife's pet project is a flower garden where we used to have an above ground pool. The gophers actively tunnel, but don't hurt the plants.

I don't think that would even fit one of my Mother in laws tomatoes.  She uses some kind of mushroom compost and they get head high and about 4 feet around.  We're still eating frozen tomatoes from last year and this years crop is about to turn.

Some of the riff-raff around us would kindly remove that metal and go sell it, along with the air conditioning units they steal.

I went with 4 and we'll see where she lands.. Wound up doing 3 planters. 2 for tomatoes and 1 for strawberries.  Speaking of riff-raff. My long time good neighbor died just after he turned 100 and now one of his son's lives there. He's into the Jenny Crank diet. He's been jailed twice. There is a lot of in and out traffic at his house now days.  I'm investing in security cameras and motion lights.... Fckers!
