Miami white ink and bleed resistance
« on: April 09, 2015, 11:57:46 AM »
I currently use the superior white for 100% cotton and am very happy with it.

Their smooth and their dazzle white says to be good for 50/50 blends. Before I order some and possibly find out the hard way, anyone have any experience with either of these of 50/50 blends?

Thanks!

It does work on 50/50 blends, also superior is made for 50/50 blends too.  Or at least that is what the site used to say for superior.  I was told by them when they accidentally sent me superior instead of smooth that they are the same inks, just that smooth as an additive in it to make it a little more workable out of the bucket.

To confirm the Superior, I got up to my Maryland location today and looked at a hoodie we did a good bit ago 50/50 blend Gildan 18500 and it had a double hit of white, flash, double hit of white through a 180 mesh and it has no bleeding.  We usually add an extra white hoodies on 50/50 blends to held offset any bleeding after a good flash, but no issues. Still pure white.  Miami did update their definition of the superior.  I ran the Dazzle about a year ago and it was fine, has a nice finish to it.

I run superior and smooth and blend the two occasionally to get the right viscosity. I think their inks are great but they may base their mix off of the temps in Florida shops. The further you go north, the colder the shop and the harder it is to get superior to play nicely. I keep my whites in a "warm" closet in the winter to make setups faster.

As far as bleed resistance, superior is definitely ok on 50/50

We have added a little curable reducer to our superior and it ran fine.

Just an FYI, I used superior as an underbase on some next level cvc tees (60/40) with a lemon yellow top color. They bled really bad. I had to reprint the job.

I spoke to the folks at Miami. They do not recommend the superior or the smooth for 50/50 (although the site does say smooth is ok for blends). They recommended the dazzle.

I reprinted the job using dazzle as the underbase. Let them sit for a few days before stacking them up and they look great.

So I warn for superior users to use on blends at your own risk. I'm probably running my dryer hotter than need be and the top color was a very thin yellow. I'm sure neither of those helped my cause. I love superior but will continue to only use it on cotton and will probably be replacing qcm with dazzle.

I am assuming you are referring to the CVC style which is 60% cotton.  Do you know what color it was?

We have used superior on red hoodies and a few other styles with no reported issues.  If it really was the case that they are telling one customer to not use it on blends and others to go ahead I wish they would get the site straight.  We would have risks 1000's of our prints going wrong.

Well, maybe Kevin, who is a member here, will see this (or hear of it) and chime in here. We haven't seen him around for a while.
That rug really tied the room together, did it not?

Black tees, which is why I wasn't worried about using the superior white on them.

My understanding on their white inks are:
Smooth and superior are pretty close to each other with smooth being formulated to be better for manual printers and superior for autos. Both being cotton inks.
Dazzle is a low bleed ink for blends
Poly is for poly.

It would be great if Kevin chimed in. All their white inks are pretty nice and I do not fault them for this. This was me trying to take a shortcut.
