After a few years my MHM is rather dirty, with a mixture of dust and glue.
What chemicals can I use to clean the painted metal and the aluminum?

WD-40 and Scotch Brite pads, maybe a scrub brush for the heavy stuff.

Sonny has a product called XEN-PAC... works better than anything I've ever seen before.

I did some tests.     WD 40 didn't do much, it's  good to put it on before the dirt sticks to the machine.
What worked the best was oven cleaner that contains a bit of caustic soda.
I sprayed it on and then took it off with a scotch pad and water.

I would recommend switching to the water base adhesive instead of the can mist / spray tack stuff. Not only is it way, way cheaper (are those cans like $3 or $4 bucks now?) but over the years that mist crap gets into your machine and holds all that dust and dirt and it just adds to the wear and tear. Not to mention getting into your lungs! And on your arms and legs and everything else...

I switched over to water base adhesive. And those mist cans are like 5 bucks now.

Lemon oil or any citrus like product should work well at not eating at the paint but breaking down any sticky gunk.

We have switched to water based adhesive, makes a big difference.
The oven cleaner with caustic soda gets the painted parts looking like new.
I try not to leave it standing for too long before using a wet scrub pad to remove it.
I was told that the aluminum parts should not be cleaned with the same cleaner, it works well but the caustic soda is bad for the metal.
I'm using a citrus based spray on that I found at a bicycle shop, I also use it for my bic chain, it's works well on the aluminum.
Soon my MHM will look like new.
