Anyone Running an Old Omni Flash?

Have an old M&R Omni flash (pic attached) with a year old panel in it and it has developed a problem where it will power up but not heat up. Sometimes it will heat and sometimes it wont, really sporadic. I opened it up and all the wires seem secure. Any ideas?

Sporadic electrical issues can be the worst to diagnose.


Turn it on and measure voltage going into the panel, make sure you're getting power there.

If so, check for signal voltage at the relay/ssr. If it's a physical relay can you hear it clicking?

My guess is that part is bad. I've only seen temp controllers go if they get super hot, and as long
as the panel connections are good, that only leaves you with the relay.

I have an old not that old but I called and M&R service walked through it witha California tech, Dan Goldberg. When he couldn't figure it out, they sent me talk to a engineer. It still took us a half day. The panel with coils in was make connection and then wasn't. Engineer said he hadn't seen that in forever because of the ceramic panels. Give them a call. No charge.

It might be the temp controller, not the newer ir panel. I had a similar issue with the same piece of equipment. Looking at the photo it looks like you have the original temp controller (1995). I replaced the controller and it fixed the problem. What you will notice if you get a new part is the pin socket will be slightly different than the original. I had to buy a new temp controller ($190.00) and the new socket ($10.00) that goes with it.

check for continuity of the panel leads. If the heating element inside the panel burnt or melted then you'll need to replace the panel.

Odds are right where the wires attach to the panel have a bad connection getting ready to go. Mine used to exhibit the same issue and I knew it was time to replace those two connections. They can look like they are good but there is going to be too much resistance as the heat increases not allowing enough juice through. If you open that up and they look crusty swap them out.

I don't know if I can write this like it is doing. I haven't checked anything yet but the LCD display does not light up when it decides it doesn't want to heat up for that day, when the LCD display does come on I know it is gonna work.
