UPS hates me and the feeling is mutual
« on: October 18, 2014, 12:40:36 PM »
Oh man, I am just venting here but UPS lost 2 grand of mine in printed merch this week. Last week it was a grand. And I know it will be covered and all that but that takes time and I have / had to reprint and then overnight or second day a lot of shirts and that takes more money and time. Two in two weeks! What are the chances of that? If it happens again next week what to do?

Are they really lost?.......Sometimes it can take weeks for packages that have gone astray to show up where they are supposed to be....

Sure, but that doesn't matter if they aren't hitting the deadline.  What good is it if they get to the customer after the event?

Not there by the time they said they would get there equals LOST.  If they were "lost" then they would be in route to the destination.  Will they be "found" later?  Probably, but at that point who cares.  Right now, safe to say they are best defined as "lost".

Brown pretty much refused to deliver ten thousand pieces to a convention in Manhattan. (Kinda dont blame them) They overnighted the order to the next convention location, their dime. Start saying FedEx a lot, and get the local hub phone number.

I guess the problem with them eventually showing up, is they have been replaced and there would be no claim for original shipment....

We do hats/shirts for the local hub here and know the guy in charge of it, when we have a issue I get in touch with him and he gets to the bottom of it.  Goes along way when THEY handle it vs you just being someone yelling to someone that doesn't know you on the phone.  2 deals in 2 weeks is crazy unlucky or something else is going on.

We spend over a million dollars a year.. yes you read that right.. over 1 mil a year on shipping between our two locations and UPS still won't give us a premium rate.

Fedex did and we're working a new deal with them to be our exclusive shipper.

I spend about 12,000.00 a year on couriers......Fedex gave me a great rate and as soon as that was in place, UPS was willing to match it....Before then UPS would not give me the time of day....

It is interesting how I have noticed everyone I talk to says to go to FedEx.

With the current situation I am lucky that I have a niche market of "underground" worldwide metal bands and they are usually always understanding and very happy to get fast turn around deal with a printer that works with the tour agents and clubs already. However, it does suck when they come to the States on tour and UPS screws things up. So I have to eat it until UPS pays me back.

In Seattle I used to use WorldWide Express (the UPS third party broker) but decided to go directly with UPS here in New Orleans. Maybe I should have stayed with Worldwide Express. They always refunded us any screws ups within a week or so and no questions asked. With UPS it is like pulling teeth.

the only problem I have with fedex is the split with ground and priority shipping.

Ground can't take the priority stuff and we need to schedule a pickup for those items.

If we want a daily priority drive by, it's $35 bucks a day for that service and we only do a few per week out here. HQ, they do daily priority stuff.

those are things we're working on with the new deal.

FYI on fedex.. in 2015 they are going to dimensional costing. Your rate is more dependent on the size of the box more than the weight, this is a direct reflecion of how a shipping container is packed for optimum spacing vs weight of the entire container. A good example is their use of the triangle boxes, they stack to make a square in a container vs tube that have lost space between them.

presently, both UPS Ground and Fed Ex Ground jump to dimensional pricing when a package reaches a certain girth.

recently I was talking to a supplier in Atlanta about shipping some frames.
Got figures to New York and California, I believe UPS, but Fed Ex was similar. The difference between 12 in a box, or two boxes of 6 each is not small. Serious coin if the wrong choice is made.

Atlanta to New York
12 screens $22.61
6 screen $8.46 (

Atlanta to California
12 screens 38.23
6 screens 10.63
That rug really tied the room together, did it not?

Thanks Andy for doing that research for me. I may be sending out a couple dozen frames and now I know what to do!

After the 1st of the year his will be "moot".....Both FedEx and UPS will be doing dimensional weight on all shipments...
