CorelDRAW - default black

Okay, I don't even have the CYMK palette displayed, yet that's the black that pops up. Not dark enough!
I use RGB black, and could swear that that's what used to be there without trying. (doesn't seem to matter which palette is set as default)

You need to change the default  With nothing selected click the RGB black in the color palette. A window will pop up. Check what you want to be default and hit OK.  DO the same with with right clicking the RGB color in the palette for outline defaults.

Once you do this go to  Tools / Save as Default

I always click Save as Default a couple times just to make sure it sticks.

Okay, I realize that I may need to get your attention over on the Refugee Facebook page, but here are some observations.
1. I don't get that window when I click the color, but if I click it twice, it opens the window for Palette Editor.

2. If I click (select) that black before I ever start, all graphics are done in that color, but text still defaults to CYMK black.

I tend to use the Pantone Solid Coated pallet and Hexachrome Black is really black for me. 

Am I using the black most of you are using?

For me, RGB black has produced great, opaque blacks on my Epson with pigment inks on WP films.
Now, I'm unsure if it is any better than my new CYMK black.

As, back to my subject, today I dug around and changed some stuff in color management.

Here's a before and after showing some settings I changed. Now, even CYMK black appears to display and output as black and not the charcoal gray that was useless for films. That map gray setting may have been my culprit.

Since I'm a low volume guy, might take me a while to notice any difference.

Sounds like you fixed your issues under the color management. I work mostly in RGB accept for simple designs. The simple ones I use PMS for faster seps. ALl major designs are in RGB for channel separations.

Frog you must be something wrong to not be getting the dialog I posted.  With nothing selected, left mouse click the RGB 100% black color swatch and give it a second for the dialog to open.  This allows you to specify global setting for certain default options.  Right mouse click will open a similar dialog for global outline settings. 

Finally once you make any edits to your workspace, make sure you ALWAYS hit the Save as Default button to make your changes stick globally or they will only stick to the current document.

Well, right click or left click, nothing. Two left clicks however gives me Pallet Editor

Something is amiss with your Corel than.   Try a different color and see if you can get that dialog. If not you may need to reset to factory default settings.

Could it be that I clicked the box to not show the dialogue again, and it was merely doing what it was told??

Open the Object Properties Docker. 

Color Fills - In the Object Manager, Click the Fill icon and then choose your color palette.  Click the color you wish to be Default. The dialog should pop up now. Select what you want to have this Object fill as default and click ok.

Outline Fills - In the Object Manager, Click the Outline icon and then choose your color palette.  Click the color you wish to be Default. The dialog should pop up now. Select what you want to have this Outline fill as default and click ok.

When finished make sure you go Tools and click Save Settings As Default. This will ensure your new settings are global and not just with the current open document.   I usually click it a couple times just to be sure.
