FedEx has been better for us than UPS, but we still use both.

UPS is better than FedEx. They both suck in their own way.

Only issue I had with UPS was when I came in with 3 boxes going to 3 different places and the clerk shipped them all to the same person even though I took the time to print out a sticker for each box. Talk about a mess and a 1/2. They shipped them all to right places but it took a week for them to pick up the boxes from the customer that recieved them all and then billed me for the reshipping.

USPS once took 2 weeks to get a box a few towns away.

I use UPS , I get my boxes by noon at home and 10am at the shop. FedEx is whenever they feel like showing up.

USPS is a different story. I had a package shipped from NY come to Akron, Ohio (25 miles away from me). They forwarded it to Indianapolis, Indiana from where it went to somewhere in Michigan. After the US tour, package came to my address 3 days later.

sometimes it's just better to drive those short distance orders yourself

We use couriers, they cost less than UPS in most cases.  Especially with multiple boxes.

Requiring a good box for shipping tells me that somebody is actually thinking and trying to make sure they provide as good of a service as possible.

If only that were the case.. unfortunately the new policy was made up by suits in an attempt to to visually keep shipping costs low by adding on small additional fees that pinch the consumer at the most inconvenient moment, essentialy forcing the consumer to cave and purchase something they don't need to adhere to a new policy, just as the basis of this thread details.

$14 for a cardboard box is crazy! Wish I had that kind of markup when my customer shows up with a plastic bag full of shirts.. how do I explain to him I have to charge him for a box to put his shirts in because the plastic bag he brought me is inferior and may get damaged on the way home 

The USPS is giving away their boxes, heck they'll deliver em to you for free!
