You could set your auto save for every 5,10,20,30 or 60 minutes. At least in X4 I can

Bingo! And backups are a product of saves.

Yeah, very important because I have often had this happen in the workflow -- setting up and going with a project without remembering to save the first time... it won't generate the backup file which gets the autosave timer going.      Also there are places- I forget exactly where on the system, it is different for various OS -- where the temp-files can still be recovered if there is a crash, but the autobackup will always be saved and able to open whereas sometimes the main file corrupts from a crash... for Adobe and Corel there have been lots of times where recovering the temp-file saved me from a serious loss of work, at least sometimes you can recover from the temp-files what didn't get saved in the auto-backup - work that took place in the time between the auto-backup and the crash.     But we all know it is best to save often, updating files and names, good folder structures... however auto-save and auto-backup are life-savers in many situations that are just unavoidable... sometimes it is just running an effect and something conflicts or it will take too much memory/processing and it chokes,  simple little things can cause a crash in any of these programs without total predictability and the auto-backup/save features just give you that much of a safety net in those circumstances.

Just reminding like you noticed that it is important to save the file right away when starting a new project or opening an old one even, to get the auto-backup running properly to the folder of the file you just saved.

On a regular windows7 or earlier computer:

C:\Documents and Settings\(your user name here)\Local Settings\Temp

they'll be titled cor1.cdr, cor2.cdr etc.

Yeah, ask me how I know....

Yes, and I believe you can also create and choose another folder, but the auto save feature only kicks in at a minmum of 5 minutes, and like Homer said, even the little quick guys are annoying to lose, and actually, the ones most likely to lose.

Nah, that create folder may only be for back-ups

A macro can be made yet you will have to click the macro button which is the same as just hitting Ctrl+S to save.    Set the backups to 5 min and then save manually every time you make a edit.

You can also change the undo count to what ever -  Please Note the more undo's you have set the larger the file / slower
