Passthrough drying
« on: June 09, 2014, 02:08:38 PM »
Planning yet another major remodel in the not-so distant future. Currently have a closet type area
for drying both reclaimed and newly coated screens. We fit about 75 screens in, dehumidifer and fans on low
to circulate some air, heater during the colder months.

As much as I hate rolling screen racks (they always seem to roll away from me every time I try
to put a screen on the rack) it is the way to go for larger volume processing of screens.

My question is regarding the pass through drying boxes or whatever you call them. Are there commercial units I
should be looking at? My idea is:

Reclaim
Passthrough dry box (from reclaim room into coating area)
Coat
Passthrough dry box from coat area to screen storage/fpu room

We already built a rack ala Mr. Kitson for post exposure drying.

So we'd need a drybox basically open on both sides, tall enough to fit our rolling racks
and long/wide enough to fit 25x36 newmans with pins. I might even want to build them into the
walls etc. when we remodel the pre-press area.

Can`t you change the casters on your racks to ones with stoppers?

Not yet Gerry, should be this winter.

6 foot tall aluminum racks full of 25x36" Newman's just don't feel like the most stable thing ever.

remove two of the wheels, replace them with equal height blocks or legs, devise a handle to lift slightly and navigate  the rack on two wheels only.
DUE TO CIRCUMSTANCES COMPLETELY WITHIN MY CONTROL YOU SHOULD GET YOUR OWN TEE SHIRT AND A SHARPIE MARKER BY NOON TOMORROW OR SIMPLY CALL SOMEONE WHO GIVES A SHIRT.

The bakers racks I got from peachsuite have nice big locking casters, you can lock/unlock with your toe pretty easily.  They're cheapo at around a hundo per but plenty sturdy loaded with 23x31 M3s with pin locks.

If yer going to go for the pass through make sure there is a nice, smooth, unobstructed path for the carts.  Wet rooms and coat areas tend to have rubber matts and dragging those loaded racks across them is a bitch.  Make a racetrack for the carts basically and it should work out gangbusters.

I drew up plans for pass thrus at our current space but found we didn't have enough overall space, it takes a good bit more than you think to work efficiently, but then again what doesn't?

You always have the best ideas. In fact a thread you had about how to flash nylon saved me a couple weeks ago.
Two flashes in a row on the auto...

Yep, running into this even with reclaim rubbermaid carts. I hate seeing stacks of screens bounce when you run over the edge of a matt.

I guess my questions are more towards the physical entry/exit and drying aspect of it. My dehumidifiers are too large to put in a pass through cabinet
efficiently.

Sliding door? Hinged door (seems ungangly) Vinyl strips? What's the norm here?
