Shirt destruction
« on: January 07, 2014, 02:20:38 PM »
A friend of mine with a large marketing company has called and asked if I know of anyone or place
that can destroy t-shirts ? he has a large company that doesn't allow there logo to go to landfill
without it being destroyed.
He has 18k tees to get rid of. He has contacts for glass/steel wood etc but not that much fabric.

Have any of you big contract guys had expierience with this or a solution. In the past they had a cut and sew operation 1/4 the shirts but this is about 10 skids worth?

they should look at getting the shirts out of the country and donated to somebody who really needs it. I know many of the shirts that are not to be released to the US market end up in some villages in Africa. The cost of destruction might cover the shipping expense and they would get some good PR out of it.

Yes, we've won our share of awards, and yes, I've tested stuff and read the scientific papers, but ultimately take everything I say with more than just a grain of salt! So if you are looking for trouble, just do as I say or even better, do something I said years ago!

I haven't put too much thought into it but why are some companies so worried about stuff like that?  It doesn't make much sense to me to destroy 18K shirts so that some family shopping at the Salvation Army doesn't buy a shirt with a company logo on it.  I just don't see any good coming out of destroying them but I see lots of good coming from donating them to the less fortunate or someone who would turn it into something good.

That's a lot of test print material too.  Silvercreek Sales could cut the logos out, destroy that part of the shirt and then use the rest for test tubes.  Actually 18 of us could take 1000 of the shirts a piece and do the same.  That would save us at least $500 on test print materials with 1000 shirts.  I got a guy that I could have him do nothing but cut the logos out/off and burn them and the rest of the shirt goes into our test print pile.

I hear what your saying about donation , But this is a big oil company that in the past sent old signage , pump toppers etc to landfill and images of them at the dump have been used against
them in the past by tree huggers.
You would be surprised at the amount of stuff my friend destroys. Recently it was a machete's from a major retailer that deemed the end too pointy! and they had to be cut
into 3 pieces counted and then sent for recycle 10 containers worth because of a customer complaint!

He's going to see if a document shredder can also do tees.

Well my idea may not be feasible then in because of shipping, but there is a organization here(probably other places also) that works with people that are developmentally challenged. The company takes on various basic jobs that the workers can handle at a low rate. I don't know the costs or how the funds are distributed or anything, I just had a sales rep recommend the company for something we had to do a while ago.
You may also want to contact your local prison system, you would be surprised what some of those places do. Here in MN there is a whole company(http://www.minncor.com/) that acts as the middle man and buys and maintains equipment for the various industries the prisioners work for. They have printing presses, furniture manufacturing the women's facility even a cut and sew operation!

Croft:  It sounds like your friends company is very image conscious from a Green / Environmental perspective.  I remember talking to a large volume printer a year or two ago and they were having their surplus printed shirts recycled into paper.  I don't have the recycling companies information but I found the following link online;   http://earth911.com/style/recycled-clothing-fabrics/

I was thinking of something similar , he'll have to look into this because this more than likely will be an on going problem for him.

US Customs and other IP enforcers have used straw blowers/spreaders to destroy illegal goods and make a really good media spot on the evening news.  Any landscaper who blows straw onto newly seeded ground would have this capability and the pile of fluff could be used for animal bedding, ground stabilization materials etc.

In my "insurance adjuster" days I was hired a couple times to supervise the destruction of load of goods that the owners did not want being "re-cycled".....Most memorable and frustrating was load of beer from a truck that tipped over.....
