outgoing emails get blocked
« on: January 29, 2014, 11:40:28 AM »
My internet provider has explained to me that for some reason, emails I send to certain addresses get blocked, apparently as potential spam or worse.
They did contact the recipient's company and straightened it out a few days ago, but the problem reoccurs.

What triggers this in the first place? Is there something that I can ask my client to do or is it strictly up to their provider (who needs to be contacted by my provider)?

I know that with some commercial diner's discount club and similar deals, it is suggested to add them to a "white list" to prevent this and guaranty receiving their email.
That rug really tied the room together, did it not?

First question is are you running your own mailserver or is it hosted by someone else.

2nd question is.. are you running your own DNS entries or not.

There's specific things you need to verify if either of those 2 answers is yes.

Frog, we had that happen before when I had my buddy host my site. I asked him about it because like you said we were blocked or our emails were sent to junk. So EVERY customer i had to tell them to look there also. Just frustrating. we were told we had to tell the customer to allow us..PITA, does not make sense.

Now that i moved our website and have the email linked to through a gmail, we do not have those issues anymore..

I think maybe something has changed with your server that this is happening.

i am no pro at this but just what happened to us.

I had this several months ago. A spambot was using my email address as a return address. It was sending 100k or more email in a few minutes time. We were black listed from all the majors like aol, yahoo, google, msn... We had to change servers and contact the rejecting servers to prove that were not really sending spam. You may want to check with your host to make sure that you are not sharing a server that is being used to send spam.
Good luck!

no, and no.

I have been told to tell them to merely add me to their address book(s) and that will solve it.

that what i was told...its a pain..

someone calls you, you take their email to send a quote or mockup...you email it..then what?  so after every customer you talk to on the phone you have to say " add me to your address book"?

A few things you can check for 'casual' emails... try to send only in text mode, not html or rich text.  Try not to have any urls in your message.. always send with a subject.

That'll help you get by many basic spam dectors.

If you're using a small isp for your email server,  contact their support department and verify that they have the following set up for your domain:

DKIM, SPF and reverse dns records for their mail server.

The SPF records being critically important, followed by the reverse dns,.
